The application of diamond in the field of medical temperature measurement technology

Scientists have found that the single-atom impurities in diamond crystals (usually replaced by a nitrogen atom or a vacancy) are very sensitive to temperature changes. Such temperature fluctuations may be a technical obstacle to maintaining qubits, and use them. The temperature measurement of biological body in the medical field is very useful.

In this research conducted at Harvard University, workers put a 100nm diamond particle into human cells, and then irradiated the diamond particle with a green laser. Because the laser changes the spin state of the electrons in the impurities, the emitted green laser turns into a red laser after passing through the nano-diamond particles. The degree of laser color change can be used to measure temperature changes in human cells.

This high-precision temperature difference measurement technology based on nano-diamond particles can help doctors distinguish the cancer-causing cells in the human body and make timely medical diagnosis in the medical field. The application prospects of nano-diamond materials are therefore broader.
