Diamond Used in Magnetic Recording System

Nov 01, 2021

First, the application of nano-diamond in the ferromagnetic coating of magnetic tape and disk is as an additive for reducing wear and a physical denaturant; secondly, adding it to the electrochemical composite coating can improve the stability of magnetic recording.

Magnetic nanoparticles have the characteristics of a single magnetic domain structure and high coercivity due to their small size. The use of them to make magnetic recording materials can increase the signal-to-noise ratio and improve the image quality. The size of magnetic particles as a magnetic recording unit must meet the following requirements:

(1) The length of the particles should be much smaller than the recording wavelength;

(2) The width of the particle should be much smaller than the recorded depth;

(3) There are as many magnetic particles as possible in a unit of recording volume.

The addition of nano-diamond to the ferromagnetic layer can significantly reduce the magnetic domains (ferromagnetic particles), that is, the recording density can be significantly increased.

Nano-diamond is introduced into the clean special film of the magnetic head, and its wear resistance is obviously increased.

The soft magnetic information carrier containing nano-diamond has the following advantages: reduced wear of the magnetic carrier layer, reduced friction and improved operational stability.

Compared with pure CoP coating, CoP-nanodiamond soft magnetic amorphous film shows that the microhardness is increased by 30%, the wear resistance is increased by 3.5 times, the friction coefficient is reduced by 28.6%, and the service life of the magnetic head core is doubled.
